AN ENERGY company is offering a £2000 cash reward to anyone who can help find vandals who threw bricks and metal bars at an electricity substation in Caernarfon.

The incident left 2,500 homes and business, including the Galeri theatre, without power for more than two hours on Saturday.

SP Energy Networks engineers were called in to repair the damage and restore power and supplies returned by around 6.30pm.

SP director Stephen Stewart has confirmed that the cash sum has been offered for any information which could lead to an arrest.

“This type of mindless vandalism really does beggar belief and we can’t fathom why anyone would want to mess with the electricity supply to their community," he said.

“Thankfully all that occurred was a loss of power, it could have been much worse particularly for those who were in close proximity to the substation itself.

“It’s pleasing our customers were only without power for a couple of hours, but I certainly apologise for the inconvenience this will have caused them on Saturday evening."

He added that the company was providing its "full support" to local police, who are investigating the incident.

The LL53 and LL54 parts of Caernarfon experienced electrical faults from around 4pm on Saturday afternoon.

Locals at the Tafarn-Y-Porth Wetherspoons were reportedly told to evacuate the building over health and safety fears.

Although the problem was resolved within a couple of hours, workers found metal bars and bricks at the site which appeared to have been thrown at the compound

Disgruntled Caernarfon esidents took to Twitter to search for help in getting their power restored and SP Energy Networks were alerted to a high volume of complaints.

After hearing of the vandalism, one user wrote: "Shameful. Making extra work for SP engineers and creating a problem for locals as well."

Anyone with information should contact North Wales Police on 101.
