A BANGOR college has designed a giant throne of books in a bid to encourage reading.

A festive "merry bookmas" display, which includes the huge chair as its centre piece, has been installed at Coleg Menai, in Bangor.

The installation is to celebrate the Advent season, and highlights the 2018-2019 Reading Ahead scheme.

Library and learning resources co-ordinator Aled Rees said: “Reading is of course a fundamental part of life, but for so many different reasons, some people just miss out.

“This scheme is aimed at getting individuals to read more and aims to attract reluctant readers, lapsed readers or those wishing to improve their literacy.

“The hope is, those getting involved will see improved literacy skills and wellbeing, both derived from a love of reading.”

The display was put together by Sharon Jones from Coleg Menai’s library team. It includes information on how to join the Reading Ahead scheme and take part in a reading challenge.

Reading Ahead is a national scheme launched in 2008 that supports young people and adults by changing their perception of reading, opening up opportunities and building their confidence.

Once registered, students need to complete a reading diary by reading, reviewing and rating six chosen items of reading material in any language, whether it is an entire book, an article, a blog or even song lyrics.

On completion of the scheme at the end of the current college year, a certificate of achievement is awarded to participants and there is a prospect of winning a prize in the local and national prize draws.
