AN ANGLESEY man is set to take on a cross-island walk to raise money for veterans this month.

On December 22, Dave Owen, 38, will be walking from the War Memorial in Holyhead to St. Mary’s Church in Beaumaris in aid of Walking with the Wounded and Help for Heroes.

Dave, who works for Starida Sea Services, says he first started supporting the latter in 2012 and says this challenge is the “latest in a long line of fundraising” he has taken on.

"I have walked Anglesey's Coastal path twice before with 50lb weights in my bag both times," Dave, who is originally from Llangoed, said.

"I have also taken on the three peaks challenge and walked from Anglesey to 'The Tin Hut', the home of Help For Heroes, in Tidworth, which was a total of 215 miles in six days."

In total, Dave says he has raised around £10,000 for Help for Heroes during his various fundraising activities.

He chose Help for Heroes due to it being close to both his heart and his family connections.

"My partner has also recently become a Help for Heroes volunteer," he added.

"My Grandfather was in the Navy and my Uncle was in the Royal Marines. I tried to join the Marines myself when I was 18, but due to an injury I sustained in recruit training I was medically discharged.

"I have a few friends that are in the forces and this I how I got involved with Help For Heroes. I’ve seen first hand the incredible work they do for those who have served our country."

Dave, who is now a voluntary co-ordinator for Help for Heroes, recently received a 'Hero Award' from the charity for his "outstanding fundraising work."

"I wouldn’t change it for world," he said.
