A VOLUNTEERING body is calling on people across Denbighshire to help those most in need this Christmas - and you can do so with just minutes of your time.

The Denbighshire Voluntary Services Council (DVSC) has launched its Christmas campaign to tackle the stigma around loneliness and isolation during the festive period.

The Ruthin-based partner of Third Sector Support Wales, a network of volunteers across Wales, is aiming to raise awareness that loneliness is common and affects people of all ages.

Helen Wilkinson, chief executive officer of DVSC, said: "We are currently running a social media campaign around tackling loneliness and isolated at Christmas. Loneliness is still one of society's great stigmas and affects all ages.

"The festive period can be particularly hard on many people, and this is when you could volunteer your time."

Research by the Office for National Statistics has found that nearly 10 per cent of people aged 16 to 24 in the UK are often lonely - the highest proportion of any age group and more than three times higher than people aged 65 and over.

The DVSC says anyone can help by spreading the word of its campaign to destigmatise loneliness on social media, and by using its campaign hashtags #Connect4Christmas and #DenbighshireVolunteers.

It also suggests visiting a neighbour with a cake or other small gestures as they can go a long way for people who are isolated.

Ms Wilkinson continued: "Volunteering can help Denbighshire communities by empowering individuals, ensuring the ongoing delivery of a range of important services in our community, helping to build social networks, connectedness and community resilience, and by providing a positive impact of the lives of others.

"Remember small acts of kindness can make a big difference."
