A PUPIL of Brynhyfryd School, Ruthin, has won first prize in a round of a national cookery competition.

Poppy Evans, aged 14, was one of five contenders from her school to take part in the Ruthin round of Rotary International’s young chef competition 2019. The others were: Calub Dean, Jessica Povey, Sam Edmead and Alfie Matischok-Silverston.

Each competitor had to prepare, cook and present a three-course meal for two within two hours and costing less than £20 in total.

Poppy prepared a menu of a black pudding, chorizo and pea starter, a main course of crayfish noodles topped with a sea bass fillet and finished with a dessert of rhubarb and apple crumble and custard.

The President of Ruthin Rotary Club, Cyrus Moghadasnia, said "All of the budding chefs did brilliantly and Poppy's menu was particularly eye-catching and delicious".

Poppy will go on to compete in the Regional Competition and has been offered a skills placement at the Manorhaus to help her to prepare for the next round. The runner-up was Alfie, and Jessica took third place. All the competitors received certificates and a chef’s apron.
