A VALE of Clwyd club is in the running for a major accolade.

Denbigh Tennis Club have been shortlisted for Tennis Wales' 2018 club of the year award following a successful 12 months at Lower Park.

The club is in line for the prestigious award following some major developments in 2018, with brand new floodlights and courtside fencing being put up in March following some months of planning by former treasurer Alastair McNab.

Following his passing in September 2017, a number of the club's committee took on the challenge and they were successful in obtaining appropriate planning permission, funding and contractors to carry out the work.

Denbigh then hosted two major back-to-back events in April as fundraising events in Alastair's memory, raising over £3,000 for St Kentigern Hospice and Stroke Association.

The annual open tournaments took place in September, with an additional ladies' singles event being held for the first time in the club's history.

Denbigh have also entered the first ever North Wales winter league in 2018/19, with the club progressing well in the ladies, men's and mixed doubles leagues.

The club can now look forward to the Tennis Wales awards ceremony at St David's Hotel, Ewloe, on Saturday, January 26.

Denbigh are up against Allt-Yr-Yn (Newport) and Caerphilly tennis clubs.

This Saturday, January 12, the club will be hosting its annual awards night at the Hope & Anchor, Denbigh.
