A 90 days suspended jail term was activated by magistrates after homeless Shane Roberts admitted ignoring a ban on him entering Asda stores and stealing Cheestrings worth £17.50.

Roberts, 22, who the court heard had been living in a Travelodge at Holyhead, received an extra seven days for the theft at Llangefni on December 19.

Prosecutor Diane Williams at Llandudno court said he had received the suspended sentence nine days earlier.

Bethan Williams, defending, said Roberts had mental health difficulties and had been homeless, hungry and without money.

The solicitor said: "There appears to be a change in him. Hopefully that’s because he’s not taking illicit substances anymore.”

Roberts, who appeared in custody, insisted: "My New Year’s resolution is to stop shoplifting.”

But court chairman Duncan Stewart said he had shown a “complete disregard” for court orders.
