POLITICIANS are backing students during a protest at Bangor University.

Ynys Môn AM Rhun ap Iorwerth and Arfon MP Hywel Williams are to meet with students and staff at the demo on Friday.

The protest has been organised following news of proposed cuts at the institution.

The two Plaid Cymru representatives will speak at the protest at 1pm, before going on to meet staff and students to discuss their concerns.

The politicians had previously met with the university’s Interim Vice-Chancellor and the Chair of the University Council.

Mr ap Iorwerth and Arfon AM Sian Gwenllian have also raised regular questions in the National Assembly regarding the funding crisis facing Higher Education institutions in Wales.

Ahead of the protest on Friday, Mr ap Iorwerth said:

“Myself and Hywel Williams, met with Bangor University’s Interim Vice-Chancellor and the Chair of the University Council before Christmas to raise our own concerns as well as those brought to us by staff and students regarding the proposed cuts.

“This week Hywel and I will be speaking at the student-organised protest against the proposed cuts and taking the opportunity to meet staff for a further discussion regarding their concerns and gather views on what they feel needs to be done going forward.

“This situation at Bangor, and across the Higher Education sector in Wales, is troubling, and Plaid Cymru will continue to make the case for Welsh Government to review the funding situation facing our universities and to give them as much support as possible during these challenging times.”
