The wind is being put back into the sails of yachts that have been with a Conwy-based club since the 1920s.

The Conwy One designed boats have been a part of the Conwy Yacht Club since 1928 over which time some have been damaged

But now chairman Vic Edwards and a a raft of volunteers from the club are working to restore all 16 of the boats to have them back on the water.

It has been an ongoing project for the past five to six years and so far three yachts have been saved and returned to the water.

Mr Edwards said: "We still want to use all of them but a lot of them, over time, have gone to a poor condition. So we are working to get them all back to 100 per cent and back on the water.

"We are hoping that the more boats we have out there the more people we can get involved with the club and the sport."

The club is hoping to have 12 boats on the water for the upcoming season with another two in the works currently that are nearly ready for action again.

Mr Edwards said the project seemed to be working with an increase in members numbers since the project started - currently up around 150.

He said the project had come a long way since it started six years ago in a backyard in Llandudno Junction in a tent.

They moved from there to a workshop on Builders Street in Llandudno and have been there ever since.

But now they are in search of a new place to repair the boats.

Mr Edwards said: "We have been given until the end of February. We were told in November so we have had plenty of time to find something.

"We currently have one boat on the go, it should be in the water by summer but it (the move) is not ideal.

"We have had one or two ideas put forward. But we are hoping someone will come forward with a spare barn or something."

All the work on the yachts are done by volunteers who, with a little help from Conwy County Borough Council grants, pay for the equipment and tools needed to mend the boats.

Mr Edwards added they fitted the yachts with new ribs, did them up with Trefnant elm and mahogany wood (with the boats being made from wood), made new sterns and riveted it all together with copper nails.
