BANKING giant Barclays has announced that it will be closing another one of its Anglesey branches this year.

The company has told its customers that the bank in Holyhead will be closing on May 3.

Rhun ap Iorwerth AM was one of those to receive a letter notifying him of the closure.

On Twitter, he wrote: "Yet another bank withdrawal. Barclays tell me they’re closing Holyhead Branch.

"Of course, I get it that footfall is falling, but the sector has to realise that this kind of uncontrolled mass exodus is having a deep impact on our high streets and towns."

Barclays said the decision had been taken due to low transactions at the branch. They added that the nearest branches for customers after the closure will be the ones based in Llangefni and Bangor.

Everyday transactions carried out over branch counters, such as paying in cheques or depositing cash, can still be completed at the Post Office on Stanley Street in Holyhead.

A spokesperson for Barclays said: "At Barclays' Holyhead branch, customer usage has continued to decline (15% in the last 24 months), which is why we have taken the difficult decision to close it.

"We hope that the availability of our other branches at Barclays Llangefni and Bangor and access to banking services at the local Post Office, along with our range of digital channels will help to ease the transition for our customers."
