THIS picture of schoolchildren which dates from 1931 has a special poignancy today (January 16) for one of the youngsters.

For today Betty Griffiths (second from the left on the back row) celebrates her 92nd birthday in a hospital bed.

She was born in Llanrwst and attended primary school in Carmel, where the photograph was taken.

Her brother Joe is third from the left in the front row.

When their father died, the family moved to Bylchau, then to Bontuchel and later to Saron, where their mother was the chapel caretaker.

Betty worked as an auxiliary nurse in Ruthin Hospital and after marrying, she lived in a cottage at Foxhall, Henllan, before moving to Denbigh.

She now lives in a bungalow in Trefnant.

Betty worked as a “home help” in the Denbigh area and was so highly regarded that she received an award for her work and was invited to Westminster Abbey to receive it.

Each week, she attends the Connexions sessions at Trefnant Village Hall, but a few weeks ago she broke her hip in a fall at home.

She is currently recuperating in Holywell Hospital.

Her friend Laraine, who runs Connexions, said they looked forward to her returning.

“She’s a wonderfully brave lady and a joy to know,” she said.
