A PRIMARY school football team and their long-time coach will represent Denbighshire at the national finals this summer, after winning their regional tournament for the second time running.

Ysgol Bryn Clwyd, Llannefydd pupils aged seven to 11 won the Urdd Denbighshire Small Schools indoor 5-aside football competition for the second time in a row in Llangollen on Tuesday, January 15.

With a core team of mostly year six pupils, the school was crowned champions after winning all four of their games and scoring a colossal 25 goals to earn the highest combined points and goals tally.

Jason Jones, who is the school's caretaker, volunteers once a week to run after-school football practise which is open to infant and junior pupils. He has also volunteered over the last 15 years to help to coach youth teams in Llandyrnog.

He said: “I am extremely proud of the team, many have been coming to football club since they were 6 years old.

“I’m proud the pupils will be representing Denbighshire again as they did last year. There are some mixed feelings too as for most of the team because this will be the last year of competing in tournaments with Ysgol Bryn Clwyd.”

In preparation for the tournament, Mr Jones worked with the pupils to adapt their game to indoor football, to make use of space by using the walls surrounding the pitch to their advantage, as well as shooting outside the area.

Mr Jones said: “We haven't always been as competitive as we are right now. As a small school it has taken a lot of hard work and commitment from the children to be able to compete in these tournaments.

"I would say playing in the team and the tournaments has taught the pupils a lot about resilience!”

Richard Monteiro, headteacher of Ysgol Bryn Clwyd and Ysgol Gellifor, praised the pupils and Mr Jones. He said: "I'm very pleased that the pupils will be representing Denbighshire again at the national finals. Mr Jones has always taught the children to play well as a team and to give 100 per cent, which is very much the ethos of our school."

Ysgol Bryn Clwyd will now prepare for the finals by organising friendly matches with neighbour Ysgol Frongoch and partner school Ysgol Gellifor.
