Record numbers visit Beumaris Castle in 2018

Beumaris Castle have seen record numbers visit the site in 2018.

The Cadw site, located on Castle Street in Beumaris, saw 104,902 people visit the site in 2018 compared to 94,556 in 2017 - more than 10,000 increase.

Increased numbers to the site also saw a rise in visitor admission income up from £337,682 in 2017 to £369,730 last year.

While Beumaris Castle saw a massive increase in visitor numbers in 2018, there was a slight decrease in Caernarfon.

Caernarfon Castle saw 215,026 visitors in 2018, down from 217,317 in 2017, while admission income was also down - £1,111,171 from £1,119,248 in 2017.

But Cadw said there was a range of different reasons for this decrease in numbers at Caernarfon Castle.

A spokesperson said: "It’s hard to draw conclusions that apply to all North Wales sites for 2018, as there are so many different factors at play.

"For example, only staffed sites are captured here (including non-paid visitors), those that had the dragons exhibits in 2017 have seen a drop, those near the beach have seen a drop due to the warm weather and some of them have altered their opening times so aren’t comparable.

"We also have extensive renovations ongoing at Conwy and a few other sites which may put people off.

"Likewise, some positive things have effected some of the sites, such as Beaumaris Castle which has benefitted from a rise in cruise ship passengers and we are competition with the increasing number of world class attractions in North Wales."
