AN AWARD-WINNING Denbighshire farm shop has set social media alight - thanks to their search for a Welsh translation to an Americanised phrase.

The Rhug Estate, based just outside Corwen, asked the public to help them find a phrase suitable for a new sign outside their 'drive thru'.

The company's Facebook post sparked several submissions from locals who came up with their own ideas.

'Pryd ar frys' (Meal in a hurry), and 'Gwledd ar y sedd' (Feast in your seat) proved to be two of the most popular. A poll which gathered 380 comments, determined the former as the winner.

"We wanted to add 'Drive Thru' to our new road signs but there's a lot of dispute about the Welsh translation as it's an American phrase," Rhug PR manager Sarah Jones explained.

"Following the poll, we consulted professional translators and they agree it is appropriate as, when translated, it means ‘meal in a hurry’.

"We will now send it onto the sign maker and should see the fully-bilingual road signs going up in the near future."

Rhug Estate owner Lord Newborough opened the UK's first farm-based drive-thru on site in September 2018.

"It's been a huge success," General manager Graham Webster said.

"It is important to us as a business to have as much of our signage and literature as possible in Welsh and English.

"We thought we would put it to our loyal customers on social media and we are very grateful for the fantastic response we have had."
