Caru Port’s Santes Dwynwen Window Dressing competition was won this year by Browsers bookshop in Porthmadog.

The competition is organised annually on behalf of Caru Port by Hunaniaith: Menter Iaith Gwynedd.

Browsers Bookshop was selected because of its imaginative use of books and other merchandise from the shop to interpret Dwynwen’s celtic roots and to inspire people to celebrate her feast-day by visiting Ynys Llanddwyn.

Ifan Llewelyn, language development officer for Hunaniaith said: “The competition’s aim is twofold: on the one hand it allows Porthmadog to celebrate and uniquely Welsh festival and adds a splash of colour to the town at a quiet time of year.

“It also gives me the opportunity to visit shops and cafes in Porthmadog to talk about the advantages of using Welsh in business.”

Sian Cowper, co-owner of Browsers added: “We’re amazed and delighted to have won, it’s a boost to our business and the discussions we had with Hunaniaith have encouraged us to make more use of Welsh in promoting the business.”

The government sponsored project ‘Welsh in Business’ offers practical support to small businesses to increase their use of Welsh and can be a great support to businesses like Browsers.
