A VALE of Clwyd sporting club went close to netting a major accolade.

Last month, a large contingent from Denbigh Tennis Club attended Tennis Wales' annual awards night.

The Denbigh club had been shortlisted for the 2018 club of the year award.

Denbigh ended the night joint-second in the category, finishing closely behind winners Caerphilly.

The award recognises tennis clubs in Wales who have made a rapid improvement over the past 12 months to enhance their programme, facilities and membership levels.

Denbigh Tennis Club was shortlisted after achieving all three.

Floodlights at the club have been installed, in addition to approximately 25 per cent extra sessions and a sharp increase in membership levels in 2018 by 20 per cent.

In addition, the club raised over £3,000 at the Alastair McNab memorial tournament in April and attracted over 70 people to the open day the following weekend.

The club also held its first ever ladies' singles tournament in 2018, with Val Fletcher joining Gareth Jones as the club's singles champions.

Meinir Hughes and Alex Carter became the club's mixed doubles champions.

In addition, the club also held its annual awards night for the first time in over 15 years recently.

However, they fell just short of a successful Caerphilly club, with over 120 members and 150 non-members participating in 24 weekly club activities.

Denbigh Tennis Club stated that they are extremely proud to have achieved joint second place as one of Wales' best tennis clubs in 2018 and look forward to enhancing upon their achievements during the next 12 months of activity.

The club will hold its annual club open day on Saturday, April 13.

Before then, the club will continue to participate in the first ever North Wales tennis winter league under their brand new floodlights.
