THE grandson of a First World War veteran will be holding a talk about the war diary of his grandfather.

The next meeting of the Llandyrnog and Llangwyfan Local History Society (LLLHS) on Wednesday, February 20 will host a talk titled The Gallipoli Diaries by Kevin Jones, whose grandfather volunteered in the Royal Army Medical Corps’ war campaign in Gallipoli, North Turkey known for its high number of casualties.

Gallipoli was First World War conflict between the Allies and Germany and Turkey which led to 130,000 allied casualties and 250 Turkish casualties either dead or injured. The then First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill resigned over the war and an evacuation was ordered ten months after it began.

A spokesperson for LLLHS said: “Kevin’s talk will focus on the war diary entries of his grandfather which he made when he went to serve as an RAMC in the Gallipoli campaign.

“He was 21 in 1915 when he went to Gallipoli and wrote quite a detailed account of his experiences. The diary entries provide an insight into a world that seems very distant and far away from us now, however, he is honest about his feelings and emotions during the experiences and therefore he sounds very much like any other 21-year-old we might know today.

“Kevin will also discuss the wider historical context, so that we can see the story in its historical setting.”

“Despite the disaster, Kevin discovered that his grandfather’s diary provides inspiration and an insight into how resilience, faith, and determination can get a person through such a terrible ordeal. He hopes that in his talk, there will be a message for everyone.”

The talk takes place at Llandyrnog Village Hall at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £3 for non-members.

Annual membership of the LLLHS costs £5 with free entry to its tri-annual events.
