A FAMOUS face was spotted in Denbighshire over the weekend.

Sir Ian McKellen, known for playing roles such as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and Magneto in the X-Men films, was seen in Llangollen on Sunday.

Jason Kirkham, who managed to get a few snaps of the 79-year-old star, says he saw him popping into the Spar shop on Castle Street.

"My partner went over to him and he shook her hand," he said.

"In the meantime, I was grabbing my camera and by the time it was set, he was passing the shop window. He was even wearing a Hobbit crew member fleece which I thought was a little amusing!"

Sir Ian was in the area in preparation for his very own show entitled "Ian McKellen on Stage" which took place at Mold's Theatr Clwyd on Monday and Tuesday night.

Ahead of his 80th birthday on May 25, he is touring a new solo show to theatres across the UK. In a statement posted to Theatr Clwyd's website, he said: "Live theatre has always been thrilling to me, as an actor and in the audience. Growing up in Lancashire, I was grateful to those companies who toured beyond London and I’ve always enjoyed repaying that debt by touring up and down the country myself, with the RSC, the National Theatre, Prospect Theatre, the Actors’ Company, as well as with commercial productions."

All proceeds collected from his show will be donated towards supporting Theatr Clwyd.
