A PAIR of Ysgol Y Llys pageant hopefuls are taking action to clean Prestatyn's streets and beaches of dog muck.

Belle International Pageant competitors Conner and Alyssa Dean, aged 10 and 8, have been busy supplying dog walkers with DIY 'poo bag' dispensers in some of their favourite places to play and walk with their family.

Currently the brother and sister have attached dispensers to fences throughout the town, including at the Ffrith - near where they live - the Nova centre, Barkby Beach and the football pitches at Y Morfa as well as in Rhyl at the Coronation gardens and Brickfield Pond and in Old Colwyn.

Darlene Fallorina, Conner and Alyssa's mother, said: "We don't have dogs, but we decided to put the dispensers in places like the beach and football pitch where we go often or Connor plays football because we noticed lots of poo. For example, last month doing a litter pick with Hedgehog Help at Barkby we saw a lot there.

The idea for the dispensers was inspired by a project in Burnham-On-Sea, Somerset, prompting Conner and Alyssa to recycle two litre size plastic drinks bottles and turn them into dispensers filled with dog poo bags for the public to use when walking their dogs

The dispensers also include instructions asking dog walkers to clean up their dog's waste and dispose of it careful, with their versions going on to inspiring fellow pageant contestants in Menai Bridge and Holyhead to create their own.

Ms Fallorina added: "We don’t drink lot of fizzy drinks, so I had to get empty water bottles from work. We used to buy the bags ourselves before Denbighshire Streetscene officer Paul Salisbury started giving them to us with the help of cllr Paul Penlington.

Cllr Paul Penlington said: "Conner and Alyssa are providing a fine example, not only to young people, but to us all, about what can he achieved through making a voluntary contribution to our community.

"They are genuine ambassadors for Prestatyn and children we can all be proud of.

"Denbighshire Streetscene team have said they're really impressed with the children's efforts."

This community minded project sits alongside the pair's fundraising efforts for charities the Ronald McDonald House Alder Hey charity, recommended by the Belle International Pageant, which have seen them both raise more than £2000 through a variety of activities.

From Saturday, April 6 to Saturday 13 Conner and Alyssa will head to Albir, Spain to compete as Belle Pageant Master Wales Conner and Belle Junior Miss Wales.
