THE innovative drive-thru at Rhug Estate has been officially opened by the Welsh Government minister for the environment, energy and rural affairs.

Last Thursday, Lesley Griffiths AM was on hand to officially open the facility, which was the first of its kind in the UK when it was originally set up in August 2018.

Speaking at the cutting of the ribbon ceremony at the Estate based near Corwen, she said, “I was pleased to officially open Rhug Estate’s Drive Thru and see how they are making their high quality and natural fresh produce available to weary travellers on-the-go.

"This is the first Drive Thru on a UK farm and shows the importance of businesses expanding their operations to make themselves competitive in the industry.

"I wish them the best of luck with their new venture and hope it follows in the footsteps of their award-winning farm shop.”

Rhug Estate made retail history when owner Lord Newborough broke new ground by opening a farm-based Drive Thru to complement the Bistro, Takeaway and Farm Shop at the entrance to Rhug farm.

Guests of Rhug who are short of time can visit the Drive Thru to purchase homemade organic chicken curry and organic beef minced Chilli Con Carne as well as hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, paninis, pastries, toasties and cakes.

Commenting on his creation, Lord Newborough said, “We were grateful to the Minister for agreeing to officially open the Drive Thru last week.

"In this busy world we live in, I recognise that not everyone has the time to stop and enjoy a delicious meal in our Bistro or quick burger at the take away, so the new Drive Thru complements the facilities that we already have and provides an easy, quick, solution for those who want to get back on their journey without delay.

"I would like to say a big thank you to the locals and holiday makers who have visited us already and have made us a regular stop off on their journeys.”

Lord Newborough was awarded the title of ‘Slow Food Cymru / Wales’ Person of the Year’ last November for creating the UK's first on-farm drive-thru.

Nia Williams, Director of the business, said: "Rhug’s drive thru is as far from fast food as it can be. We salute the work Lord Newborough has done."
