Choirs from Anglesey are set to compete for a chance to compete at the Eurovision as a Ruthin school seeks its second win of the primary prize.

The final of the ninth Côr Cymru – the Choir of Wales competition – will take place at the Great Hall, Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Sunday, April 7 and will see Anglesey choirs Côr Ieuenctid Môn and Côr Sioe Ieuenctid Môn compete against three other groups from across Wales.

The winning choir will go on to represent Wales in the Eurovision Choir Competition which is being held this August in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The event, which will be presented by Heledd Cynwal and Morgan Jones when it airs on Welsh medium channel S4C, has developed into one of the highlights of the Welsh cultural calendar since it was launched in 2003.

Elen Rhys, S4C’s Entertainment Commissioner said:“This competition is one of the cornerstones of S4C’s events and we’re very proud of it.

“The standard is incredible once again this year, and we’re very proud to celebrate Wales’s choral talents on S4C.

Competing against the two choirs are Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion from the counties of Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion, Johns' Boys from Rhosllannerchrugog, near Wrexham, and CF1 from Cardiff.

Also, for the third time, Côr Cymru will be inviting Welsh primary school choirs to the stage.

In a special competition, Côr Cymru Cynradd - The Choir of Wales Primary competition - will crown the best primary school choir on Saturday, 6 April with winners in 2017 Ysgol Pen Barras in Ruthin trying to regain their crown against Ysgol Gymraeg Teilo Sant Llandeilo, Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llwyncelyn, Porth and Ysgol Gymraeg Llangennech.
