A VALE of Clwyd swimmer is the best in Britain.

Last week, eight-year-old Flora Jones, of Denbigh Dragons Swimming Club, hit the top of the British rankings following the Bangor Swimming Club diddy gala, in Llandudno.

She topped the standings in the short course 50-metre breaststroke courtesy of her time of 47.64 seconds at the meet.

This was 0.08 seconds ahead of her nearest rival and Flora was one of only four swimmers from throughout the UK to complete the distance in under 48 seconds.

Flora's mother Karen explained: "The diddy gala was Flora’s first gala competing at 50m – she hadn’t been old enough to enter until now.

"She picked up gold medals in all five of her races, placing first in Wales for the 100 metres individual medley, and posting a time of 47.64 seconds to head straight to the top of the British rankings for the 50 metres breaststroke.

"In total, the 19 strong junior squad picked up 15 gold medals, seven silver and one bronze."

It was a terrific meet all round for the Denbigh Dragons, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year.

A total of 19 swimmers competed on the day in 77 events and 56 personal bests were recorded.

A total of 15 gold medals were achieved by the Denbigh swimmers, with seven silvers and one bronze.

Four Dragons were the best in their respective age groups.

They were Ewan Leonard, Madi-Haf Jones, Sian Evans and Flora Jones.

The club gained the second biggest points haul on the day.
