A “life-changing” footcare service for older Powys residents says it needs more volunteers to keep it running.

Age Cymru Powys, the largest older people charity in Wales, says there is a “big demand” for its Simply Nails service which prevents older people from suffering painful and serious issues with their feet and helps them get out and socialise.

The charity is calling for more people to volunteer and donate their time to help make a difference to older people living in their area.

The toenail cutting services are held regularly for people aged over 50 is offered at nine clinics across Powys where every volunteer is trained by the Powys Teaching Health Board Podiatry team.

“Cutting someone’s toenails really can be life-changing!” an Age Cymru Powys spokesperson said.

“As we get older, at some stage we all have problems with cutting our toenails. Many older people cannot cut their own toenails, and this can cause painful and serious issues.

“Our existing footcare volunteers love the opportunity to do something wonderful for older people, that helps them get out, socialise and helps prevent falls.

“Footcare may seem like a small thing, but it can make a big difference to the lives of older people.”

Problems occurring from poor footcare include painful feet that can make it difficult to put shoes on and walk; an increased risk of falling; and reduced mobility which can be a major cause of social isolation.

The not-for-profit service is also an opportunity to chat with older people about how they are getting on with tea and biscuits.

Age Cymru Powys currently need volunteers for only a few hours per month at nine clinics, across the county:

  • Newtown
  • Welshpool
  • Llanidloes
  • Llandrindod Wells
  • Builth Wells
  • Llansantffraid
  • Brecon
  • Ystradgynlais
  • Glangrwyney

The charity is also looking to open new footcare clinics in additional locations across Powys.

People how would like to volunteer their time to help members in their community are asked to get in touch with the Age Powys Cymru team on 01597 825908.
