THIS YEAR'S North Wales Truck Gathering will be held in memory of two young men who died in a car accident.

Held at a convenient location just off the A55 near Caerwys on August 10 and 11, the event was first organised by a small group of local truck drivers in 2011.

What started out as a gathering aimed to bring truck drivers from across the country together has become something so much bigger over the years.

This year's event will pay tribute to Michael Jones, 18, and Leon Rice, 17, both from Ruthin, who, along with Colin Hornsby, 17, from Greater Manchester, died in a car crash in October 2018.

One of the organisers, Islwyn Jones, said: "Michael and Leon assisted in the setting up and clearing of the event and were valuable members of the team always willing to help in whatever task that needed to be done.

"Michael had been a big part of the Gathering for many years with his father and made many friends in the trucking community. The trucking community will never overcome the loss of these young men but this year’s gathering, although emotional, will be the best yet where we can come together as one family and make memories that can be cherished forever."

The home of this year's gathering will be at a location just off the A55 at Caerwys where large vehicles can easily access the site without congesting local villages or towns.

The site is also conveniently located for those travelling to visit the gathering as it has ample car parking spaces and allocated disabled parking.

"We are anticipating somewhere in the region of 300 vehicles in attendance for the public to admire along with trade stalls and various charity stalls also a selection of food outlets," Mr Jones continued.

"We also have a children’s area where we have a fun fair, play bus and various other activities and stalls. A few of the well known manufacturers will also be in attendance and guests can view brand new vehicles and sit inside to see what life is really like as a truck driver, as well as seeing some of the latest trucks to hit North Wales roads."

Saturday evening will see the Gathering welcome back Marty Mone - who will be singing live at their onsite licensed bar.

Saturday night will also see the largest truck lights display of its kind in north Wales take place as all the vehicles onsite switch on their lights for all to admire.

The main purpose of the event is to raise money for local charities - with last year's gathering raising £12.086.20.

The money was then split equally between Blood bikes Wales and 4louis. This year, the two chosen charities are createasmile and CLAPA.

"The committee of the North Wales Truck Gathering would like to thank all sponsor’s, such as JD Owen Transport, friends and families and truck and van drivers for their support which has made this event the success it is today," Mr Jones said.

"This year, we hope to raise even more money for our charities and we call upon the public and companies for help." Visit www.northwalestruckgathering.co.uk for more information.
