COUNCILLORS from Denbighshire and Gwynedd have joined forces to call for an urgent meeting with the Welsh Government to resolve a notoriously dangerous junction on the A5/A494.

The plea has been made following an accident at the junction, in Druid near Corwen, on Friday, involving a motorbike and black Vauxhall Astra

The crash resulted in the Air Ambulance taking a motorcyclist to the Royal Hospital in Stoke with serious injuries.

Councillors Mabon ap Gwynfor (Llandrillo), Elwyn Edwards (Llandderfel) and Corwen’s Huw Jones first called for improvements to be made to the stretch of road last November, following a spate of accidents.

The trio have now renewed their appeal by setting up an online petition calling on Government officials to take urgent action before any other accidents occur.

Cllr ap Gwynfor, who in the past has said that the inclusion of a roundabout at the junction might help prevent accidents, said, “We are all extremely sad to hear of the accident, our thoughts are with the man who suffered serious injuries.

“Local residents have warned of the dangers of this junction many times, and we as local representatives got together last year to call for improvements.

“We have now written to the Minister, Ken Skates, asking for a meeting at Dwyryd (Druid) as soon as possible so that he can see for himself how dangerous this junction is.

“We are demanding that improvements are made urgently before anybody else suffers an accident. We sincerely hope that the individual involved gets well, and urge any witnesses to contact the Police.”

In response, Welsh Governement Minister for Economy and Transport Ken Skates said: “A feasibility study has already commenced into the current mode of operation of the traffic lights on the A5 Druids and any recommendations from the report following its completion will be taken forward at the earliest opportunity.

"The latest accident is extremely sad and the Welsh Government is determined to improve road safety at this point.”

Police are also appealing for further information about the crash. Sergeant Nicola Grimes-Williams, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “The collision resulted in the male motorcyclist being taken to hospital in Stoke with injuries which are described as serious.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have dashcam footage of either the motorcyclist travelling in the direction of Corwen to Cerrigydrudion or the car travelling in the opposite direction, prior to the incident, to come forward.”
