A DRIVER who fled at speeds of nearly 100mph said he was trying to escape police because he had no insurance.
The man was spotted by traffic officers in Little Lever at around 5am on Wednesday, May 8, and fled into an estate.
He was pursued by marked cars through several small residential streets but officers said the driver became lost before eventually coming to a stop on Herbert Street, off High Street, in the early hours of the morning.
Following the incident, officers posted Twitter saying: "A VW Passat was pursued through Little Lever at speeds approaching 100mph.
"The driver would subsequently become lost in the estate and came to a stop on Herbert Street.
"He stated that he drove like that because he had no insurance."
The man subsequently failed a drugs test and was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, fleeing from the police, driving without insurance and drink driving.
