A North Wales mum has become the face of a new campaign video to help raise awareness of the impacts that cancer can have on people’s lives.

Ali Alcock, a social worker from Corwen, was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2015, and will soon celebrate four years of the all clear.

The video from Macmillan Cancer Support is part of a series of videos featuring people who have had cancer, and who have chosen to share their stories to help others who might find themselves in a similar position.

Appearing alongside her father and her son, as well as her constant four-legged companion Ronnie, the video continues Ali’s astounding journey of ‘baring it all’ for the charity.

In 2017, Ali and a group of friends and family who had all been touched by cancer in some way, appeared in a naked calendar photoshoot to help raise funds for the charity that supported her.

The calendar, along with two charity night events, went on to help raise well over £10,000.

Talking about her latest efforts to support the charity and raise awareness, Ali said: “Macmillan has been there to support me right from the early days of my diagnosis, all the way through to my ‘all clear’ and beyond.

“I’m hugely proud to be flying the flag for Wales in this series of videos which features people from all over the UK.

“We are all different, from all different walks of life, and from all different areas of the UK. What we share is an experience of just how individual, wide ranging and often unexpected the impacts of cancer can be.

“It’s not just about your medical care – it’s about your finances, relationships, mental health, and it’s about your wider emotional or spiritual needs.

“For me the impact of my treatment, which left me unable to have any more children, was by far the hardest thing to come to terms with. Far more than my cancer diagnosis itself.

“What I want to do now is to live life as fully and as positively as I can. Supporting the charity that has helped me to do that, is a huge part of this.”

Richard Pugh, Head of Services for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales said: “We can’t thank Ali enough – not just for this latest video, but also for her huge fundraising efforts. Without the support of people like Ali we simply wouldn’t be able to do what we do for people with cancer.

“Cancer can turn people’s lives upside down, and it can impact in ways that are the least expected.

“Ali is a hugely inspirational lady and her video story shows that if people can get the right support, at the right time, then they can continue to live life as fully as they can – and that is exactly why Macmillan is here.”
