Spring lambs:

There was a very good entry of 2,398 remaining up on the year once again.

A larger entry of standard weight lambs remained a very good trade, with the average for that weight category up by 11ppk.

A strong entry of medium weight lambs also attracting a premium, up 7ppk on the week.

It was another very good trade with the latest new vendors returning.

TRADE remained firm for stirks and store cattle.

A special entry of sucklers drew a large crowd of buyers and resulted in a fast trade.

BARREN and cull cows (35):

A larger number of OTM cattle were on offer, seeing a top price of £1348.11 (169ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 819kg from CV & EM Lewis, Buttington New Hall.

RA Owen, Tynewydd made 139ppkg for a Charolais weighing 840kg making £1167.60.

OTM bulls saw a top price of £1516.20 (114ppkg) for a Charolais bull weighing 1330kg from TM Jones, Ynys Tudor.

Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1168.50 (150ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 779kg from E Davies & Co, Dyffryn Gwyn.

J R Evans, Brynderwen made 146ppkg for a Charolais x weighing 738kg

making £1077.48.

Heifers under 48 months topped at £1452.66 (186ppkg) for a heifer weighing 781kg from CV & EM Lewis, Buttington New Hall.

Prime lambs (3,122):

A larger entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 235.9ppkg, with a top price of 272ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 36kg making £98 from JE & SM Watkin & Son, Pentrego, and £107/head for 42.5kg lambs from DI Roberts & Son, Stingwern and JR, RM & JP Andrew, Bronheulog for 46.5kg lambs.

Again, there was an increase in the number of spring lambs forward at a price level similar to livestock markets prices from later in the week.

There was still good competitive bidding on all weights and grades, especially the better quality, better shaped, well fleshed lambs. Heavier weight lambs continue to be more difficult to sell, however they will improve as hogget numbers dry up.

Lighter weight lambs continue to sell to a strong demand so vendors are encouraged to keep drawing particularly well fleshed lambs.

Prime hoggets (2,084):

A smaller entry of hoggets forward sold to return an average of 175.17ppkg, with a top price of 200ppkg for pen of hoggets weighing 43kg making £86 from DG & BE Jenkins, Gaerfawr, and £104.50/head for 72kg hoggets from RA & E Davies, Ffinnant.

A good late season number of hoggets forward sold to a slightly better trade than the previous week, as number dry up.

Best quality well fleshed hoggs sold to a competitive trade particularly for the handier weight 38-45kg hoggs.

With more buyers switching off hoggs every week, vendors are encouraged to sell any hoggets they have remaining as soon as possible.

Cull sheep (2,800):

There was a strong entry of 2,678 cull ewes that sold to a stronger trade once again with an overall average of £71.68.

Lean ewes and Welsh ewes were on fire!

The fattest ewes were harder work with the fattest Texel x ewes struggling to reach £85.

The top price of the day of £138 went for a pen of 5 Texel x Beltex ewes from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp.

Many Welsh ewes sold between £70-£80.

A total of 59 cull rams averaged £69.39, with a top price of £114 going to JS & A Howells, Shadog Farm.

Cows and calves (35):

There was a fantastic entry of 97 cows and calves forward, which included the inaugural prize show and sale of heifers and calves which was kindly sponsored by the Owen Family, Sandilands, Tywyn, who also donated a trophy in memory of their father Bryn Owen.

Judging the heifers and calves were Geraint and Huw Owen, who awarded their father's trophy to Richard and Stephen Whitley of Haulfryn Farming, Spon Farm, Buckley for their Purebred Limousin 1st calver with

her Limousin bull calf, which went on to make the day's top price of £3,550.

Another first calver with a bull calf from the same home made £3,050, whilst a Purebred Limousin heifer with a heifer calf sold for £2,850. Taking second and third prize in the show was MM and R Morris, Maestanyglwyden, who had 14 Limousin, British Blue x Limousin and Pedigree Limousin heifers and calves forward, which sold to a

top of £3,020 for a Limousin x 1st calver with a heifer calf sired by Goldcard.

Other leading prices for Ryan Morris was £2,800 (x3), £2,750 (x2) and £2,700.

Overall, his 14 outfits averaged £2,560.

From RE & CJ Davies, Boycott Hall were six Limousin x 1st calvers with four bull and two heifer calves which sold to a top of £2,650 to average £2,270.

From JE & JT Evans & Son, Upper Cefn Penarth were 18 Limousin x

1st calvers with Limousin x calves at foot which sold to a top of £2,450 for an outfit with a bull calf, with other leading prices at £2400, £2450, £2300 (x2) and £2200.

Overall, the 18 averaged £2060.

Presented by RW Owen, Geirn, Anglesey were 10 Limousin x 2nd calvers and calves with an outfit with a bull calf selling to £2420, £2120 and £2000.

Ten Limousin x 1st calvers from the same home sold up to £2020, £1950 and £1920 (x2).

Overall, the 20 outfits averaged £1850.

DP & RE Evans, Moel Y Garth sold nine Limousin x 1st calvers with Limousin x calves at foot to a high of £2150, with other notable prices of £2000 and £1900.

Presented by AW Jones, Pwllcoch, Rhosybol was a Limousin x 1st calver with a Limousin x bull calf which sold for £2420.

Texel hoggs peaked at £228 from J Lewis & Son, Penyffynon. Mule hoggs reached £236 from MJ & JM Price, Penycrug and Suffolk x hoggs sold to £205 from IC Goodwin, Lower Esgair.

Good demand for all sorts right through the sale.
