RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 2,824 prime lambs to 275.0ppk / £113; 372 prime hoggets to 202.3ppk / £100; 789 cull ewes and rams to £100 and eight prime cattle to 252ppk / £1,257.50.

New season lambs:

There was an increased entry on the week again.

Strong meatier types remained at similar levels.

A larger number of standard weight lambs averaged 213.8ppk, with medium weight lambs also at a premium, averaging just under 220ppk through and through.

In the barren cows section, an aged Limousin cow realised £1,089.55 with a younger Limousin cow achieving 151.0ppk.

MESSRS Morgan Evans & Co report an entry of 25 ewe and lamb couples, and 20 store hoggets.

Fewer numbers were forward and they sold to a steady trade.

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 144 store cattle to £1,180.00; 64 calves and stirks to £580; three OTM cattle to £876.30; five breeding bulls to £2,677.50; 12 dairy cattle to £1,580.00; 18 cows with calves at foot to £2,100.00 and 273 ewe and lamb couples (605 head) to £192.00.

Calves (auctioneer: Dafydd Parry):

An increased entry on the week, which included some topping calves and a good selection available for the numerous buyers present.

A classy 3 week old Charolais x bull calf eventually sold for £435.

Of the British Blue entries, a 7 week old bull calf achieved £420 with other British Blue calves from the same vendor selling for £300 and £295.

Younger British blue calves were also in demand with a 3 week old achieving £310.

A consignment of 2 and 3 month old Simmental bull calves from Pwllheli sold from £370 to £415.

A 8 week old Limousin bull calf created a lot of interest, selling for £385, as well as an 8 week old Limousin heifer calf achieving £350.

A consignment of British Friesian bull calves from Anglesey topped at £160.

There was another good trade.

The sale saw the annual consignment of cows and calves from Pwll Coch Uchaf, Anglesey which as always attracted a strong crowd and 100 per cent clearance.

Topping the prices was a 32m Limousin 1st calver with a 7 week old Limousin bull calf at foot selling for £2,100.00.

The same vendor also sold a 43m Charolais x 1st calver with a 7 week old Limousin calf at foot for £1,880.00.

OTM:

94m Limousin to 140.0ppk.

Dairy cattle:

The latest dairy cattle sale also saw a 100 per cent clearance and a brisk trade.

Selling for £1,580 was a three-and-a-half year old Holstein Friesian 2nd calver giving 23 litres.

Lot 4, a British Friesian x 1st calver giving 29 litres, sold for £1,400.

The Montbeliarde x 3rd calver giving 39 litres eventually sold for £1,280.

As always, the dairy section entries create a lot of interest pre-sale with entries advertised via the large database.

There was an entry of 273 ewe and lamb couples, with a firm trade throughout.

Vendors again came from far afield.

TRADE held up for cattle, with demand still very strong.

MESSRS Morgan Evans & Co report an entry of 1636 lambs, 85 hoggets and 887 cull ewes and rams.

Lambs met a solid trade despite the national average taking a downward turn at the beginning of the week, topping at 316ppk.

Fewer hoggets were forward, selling to a steady trade.

Cull ewes and rams met a brisk trade topping at £148 for two Beltex and Charollais cull rams by R A Hughes, Henblas, Llanfechell and £100 for two Texel ewes by Messrs J & H Thomas, Bryn Garth, Llanerchymedd.

Welshpool May store cattle fair - May 28

WELSHPOOL livestock sales is pleased to report a very good trade at the May fair, which had a catalogued entry of 450 cattle.

The quality of cattle was particularly pleasing considering the time of year and this was reflected in the prices which were achieved.

The steers averaged 216.59ppkg or £939.72 per head, with heifers averaging 209.06ppkg or £859 per head and bulls averaged 180.73ppkg or £483.68.
