THE annual Ruthin Scarecrow Festival took to the streets of the historic market town despite the floods.

More than 20 entries were made this year, though some were better prepared for the heavy rain than others. Mary Poppins kept her magic umbrella open while Paddington Bear styled his old hat and duffel coat.

The competition was organised by Jayne Williams, Ruthin Forward member, who has worked tirelessly in recent months to get more people involved.

Among the other straw-filled entries, Spiderman took shelter in Ruthin Library and got his sticky hands on Marvel magazines, and Peppa Pig found refuge on the side of a house until the rain stopped, which has given her plenty of muddy puddles to splash about in.

Mrs Williams said: “More people are getting involved and coming up with really fun ways of decorating our beautiful town.

“It is truly lovely to see over 20 scarecrows around the town, entries from children, local companies and community clubs.

“With limited resources the competition has demonstrated how community minded people and groups can have a positive effect on our local community.”

The winning scarecrows will be announced at Ruthin Festival after the parade of more than 250 people through the town on Saturday, June 22.
