DREAMS have come true for a Junior Football Club on Anglesey who were crowned champions of a European tournament held over the weekend.

The Amlwch Town under 11’s, coached by Euriona and Rob Williams-Jones, travelled to the world-renowned Nou Camp in Barcelona and beat off competition from teams all the way from the Netherlands to America to be crowned Europa Cup winners.

Coach Euriona said: “On arrival we were greeted by cameras filming us, all the juniors felt like superstars.

“On the first day, we split our team into two squads for the competition as it was 7 a side. Both teams were a bit tired with an early start Saturday playing teams from all over the world of all abilities.

“Thousands of parents and supporters watched from the stands, roaring and cheering the children of all ages on. The final was an exhilarating one against Carvalho Football Academy but the team were unstoppable, bringing the trophy home to Amlwch and Wales.”

Both teams involved for the juniors then moved on to the semi finals, before one team then successfully moved on to the final with a win against Boston (America).

“It was a magical moment when we walked out of the players tunnel onto the same pitch as their idols.” added Rob.

“Winning the u11's Europa Cup in the Barcelona stadium was an unbelievable achievement for the team. I am so proud of how they’ve developed as individuals over the last season and had the time of their lives.”

With increasing opportunities available to women within football, Euriona started as a safeguarding representative at Amlwch Juniors and recently completed her C licence with the FAW.

She says the trip was something that her and Rob, who is himself a former Amlwch player, was something they had wanted to do for “a long time”.

She added: “Parents who joined us on the trip said it will ‘stay with them forever’ and the kids were saying ‘we’ve touched the same pitch as Messi, I don’t ever want to wash my boots’.”
