YNYS Môn's men team have stormed to the top of Group A and the semi-finals of the Huws Gray 2019 Inter Island Games football tournament with a 100% record.

Campbell Harrison's side, made up of players from clubs like Porthmadog, Conwy Borough, Holyhead Hotspur and Bodedern Athletic, have placed themselves as one of the favourites to win the competition after enjoying a fine start.

On matchday one on Sunday, they found themselves 1-0 down to the Western Isles at Holyhead Hotspur's New Stadium after Robert Shirkie fired the visitors in front just before half time.

However, a spirited fightback in the second 45 brought goals from Hotspur's own Mel McGinness and Llangefni winger Liam Morris and saw the Môn men turn the tie on its head to claim a 2-1 win.

Matchday two a day later proved to be a little more straightforward for the Men's team as they beat Orkney 3-1.

The home side took the lead on 18 minutes after some great work from Gari Owen allowed midfielder Jay Gibbs in to fire home from close range.

Soon after, McGinness made it two goals in as many matches when he found himself in behind the Orkney defence to score with a well-taken shot. Liam Delday gave Orkney hope when he found the back of the net just before half time.

Ynys Môn regrouped at the interval but had to work hard to find that third and decisive goal. Substitute John Littlemore went closest, firing just over the bar after finding space in behind the defence.

The final nail in the coffin arrived on 85 minutes, when Sam Jones, who has recently signed for Caernarfon Town, bagged from the penalty spot after Jay Gibbs was brought down in the box.

It was the final group game that seemed to highlight just how good this Môn team is however.

Coming up against group favourites Jersey in front of a bumper crowd of 1,126 at Llangefni's Bob Cae Parry ground, Harrison's men held out for a famous 1-0 victory.

Liam Morris' second goal of the tournament after just eight minutes proved to be the decisive moment as the men put in a real shift to come away with three points and a clean sheet intact.

The result also controversially put Jersey out of the tournament. Having been placed in the competition's only group of four, their 7-0 victory over bottom side Western Isles was omitted from calculations to determine the best-placed runner-up, in accordance with Fifa rules.

As a result, the Ynys Môn men side now face the Shetland Isles at Cae Bob Parry on Thursday (7.30pm), knowing that progressing will guarantee them a gold or silver medal in the final, where they would meet Isle of Man or Guernsey.

The last time Môn won a silver medal was back in 2001 at the Isle of Man and a gold last came 20 years ago in Gotland.

Speaking ahead of his side's semi-final clash, forward John Littlemore (below) said: "This is my third time representing Môn, as I was also selected for Jersey 2015 and Gotland 2017 but this is definitely the best squad I've been involved with.

North Wales Chronicle:

"We have a good mix of youth and experienced players who will all fight endlessly for the badge on the shirt and for one another too.

"The support for the team has been phenomenal so far so if we can get a massive crowd there again tomorrow night and get behind the boys it would make a massive difference. We want to keep doing the island and Wales proud so let’s get ourselves into the final."

Fellow team-mate and joint top scorer Mel McGinness added: "It's been hard going but it's all worth it, especially after we managed to make the semi final stage for the first time in 20 years.

"The way the group of lads, the players and the managers, have pulled together after only a few training sessions and games shows were all in it for the same reason - ‘Ynys Môn’".
