WELSH children's character Sali Mali celebrated her 50th birthday this week.

Famed for her orange dress, Sali first appeared in books written by Mary Vaughan Jones in 1969, whilst she was a lecturer at Bangor's Normal College.

Illustrations for the books were drawn up by her colleague in Bangor, Rowena Wyn Jones.

Sali proved to be such a hit with the younger generation that she then went on to appear in a number of other stories, as well as animated and live-action TV series.

Vaughan Jones died in 1983 but other authors continued to produce the Sali Mali stories and new books are still being published today.

To celebrate Sali's milestone, landmarks across Wales, including the National Library in Aberystwyth, lit up orange and children's parties were held nationwide.
