A CLWYD MP has backed a Denbighshire campaign to remain in the European Union because Brexit “would be a disaster” for her constituents.

Susan Elan Jones, Labour Party politician for Clwyd South, said in a letter of support for the newly established Denbighshire For Europe campaign that “no option is better” for the county’s economy than being a part of the EU bloc.

The MP, whose constituency includes Llangollen, Corwen and surrounding areas, has been a long-standing cheerleader of a second referendum on Brexit.

In the letter Susan Elan Jones said that the “devastation” of a No Deal exit from the EU, which has been suggested by Conservative leadership hopefuls Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt, “would be felt most sharply in rural communities including those in Denbighshire”.

The campaign is set to be launched in Denbigh on Friday, July 5. On Wednesday, its event page had 19 people listed as attending.

The letter signed by Susan Elan Jones said: “I am delighted to send this message of support to mark the launch of Denbighshire for Europe.

“Brexit would be a disaster for Denbighshire, Wales and the UK. As the last European elections made clear, there is no longer a Leave majority in our area, Wales or the UK.

“No option is better for our economy than remaining in the EU, but the No Deal option that Boris Johnson is prepared to contemplate would truly devastate our local communities. This devastation would be felt most sharply in rural communities including those in Denbighshire.

“As the MP for Clwyd South, I have been, as most of you will be aware, a long-standing supporter of the campaign for a Final Say referendum. I greatly welcome calls from Wales’ First Minister Mark Drakeford urging the UK Parliament to legislate for this and then secure a Remain vote.

“I look forward to playing my part locally in such a campaign and if there is a general election as well, I will continue to fly the flag for Remain.

“It is vital we work cross-party on this, the pivotal issue of this generation.”
