A PRO-INDEPENDENCE march for Wales held over the weekend has been described as “phenomenal” by a Denbighshire Councillor.

Cynwyd’s Cllr Mabon ap Gwynfor was one of around 8,000 people who attended the rally in Caernarfon on Saturday.

Set up AUOB (All Under One Banner) Cymru, the event saw people from all over the UK come to show their support for the movement to make Wales an independent nation.

Speaking after the march, Cllr ap Gwynfor (on the right below) said: “The turn out for the independence march on Saturday was phenomenal. The calls for independence are increasing, and the prospect of an authoritarian right-wing Government led by Boris Johnson leading us over a no-deal cliff is driving that demand.

“Other small nations with less resources are thriving as independent states: Iceland, Denmark, Ireland, Slovenia, New Zealand - to name but a few. There is no reason why Wales can’t succeed as an independent nation.

Denbighshire Free Press:

“We have the resources - we’re the fifth largest exporter of electricity in the world, for instance. And the people who live here are as capable and intelligent as anyone anywhere else.

“We can change and improve life for people in Wales by standing on our own two feet and build an economy that works for us based on our strengths. I’m confident that Wales will be a successful independent state before long.”

Guests invited to speak during the rally included singer Dafydd Iwan and Scottish comedian and political activist Hardeep Singh Kohli.

Grisial Hedd Roberts from Ruthin, who was part of the group of friends who restored the Cofiwch Dryweryn mural back to its former glory following a bout of vandalism, was also in attendance on the day.

“It was a fantastic event and a real pleasure to see so many people turn up to take part,” she said.

“My mother, father and brother were all there alongside me to support the the movement for the first time. It was nice to seeing many people enjoy themselves on a day that could prove to be important in Welsh history.”
