RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 2,047 prime lambs to 262.7ppk / £128; 874 cull ewes and rams to £120 and four prime cattle to 252ppk / £1,223.23.

New season lambs:

A good entry of lambs met an excellent trade and they were much improved on the week at 185.1ppk.

Tup lambs saw demand.

Once again, there was a lot of quality about.

Many more are required on a weekly basis, including OTM cattle, with excellent loading and unloading facilities making it an easy process for both vendors and purchasers.

Ruthin Farmers' Auction also pays on the day, with cheques available on the fall of the hammer.

Top priced per kilo was a 450kg heifer by B L Jones & Son, Penffroddwen at 252.0ppk.

Top priced beast was a 565kg Limousin heifer by B L Jones & Son, Penfforddwen at £1,223.23.

Overall average: 219.4ppk.

Mold primestock sale - July 29

CATTLE trade was very brisk, with slightly fewer forward and buyers in keen demand.

There was another good show of cull cows, which remain very dear for all types.

Ruthin store and breeding sale - July 25

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of five store cattle to £900; 38 calves to £365; two OTM cattle to £702 and 71 store lambs to £71.

A lot less stock were entered because of the Royal Welsh Show week.

Calves (auctioneer: Dafydd Parry):

There was an entry of 38 calves, selling to £365 for a Limousin bull.

This was followed by a British Blue bull selling for £310.

Topping the heifers calves was a Limousin selling for £305.

The auction is expecting a large number of calves on a weekly basis.

Ruthin Farmers Auction has teamed with Genus to run a monthly competition within the weekly calf section to win Genus vouchers.

The vendor with the highest priced calf, one month old and under sired by a Genus bull, during each month will be awarded a £50 voucher to spend on agricultural products.

THERE were plenty of buyers ringside for cattle of all types and ages.

Demand was still good.

Dairy was a firm trade again, with buyers going home empty handed.

The calf trade improved on previous weeks, with a smaller number forward.

MESSRS Morgan Evans & Co report an entry of 136 store cattle, 30 OTMs, eight cows and calves, and two stock bulls.

Store Cattle met a solid trade, with a good entry of OTMs also achieving excellent prices.

Meanwhile, cows and calves met a steady trade.

Barren and cull cows (12):

A similar number of OTM cattle were on offer during the week, seeing a top price of £1075.90 (145ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 742kg from B L Griffiths, Lower Penygelli.

The same home also made 135ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 648kg making £874.80.

Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £912 (120ppkg) for a Stabiliser x weighing 760kg from D B & G M Lewis, Cefn Ceido.

The same home also made 116ppkg for a Stabiliser x weighing 656kg making £760.96.

Heifers under 48 months topped at £1058.40 (144ppkg) for a British Blue x heifer weighing 735kg from J D Jones, Croggin-iddon.

The same home also made 154ppkg for a British Blue x heifer weighing 643kg making £990.22.

Averages of the day: OTM cows (6) 127.11ppkg / £833.41; Cows 48-72 Months (3) 116.25ppkg / £794.35; Heifers under 48 months (2) 148.67ppkg / £1024.31; Steer under 48 months (1) 119ppkg / £648.55; Overall average 127.49ppkg.

Prime lambs (3,866):

A larger ntry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 177.89ppkg, with a top price of 203ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 40kg making £81 from B E & B E Langford, Llettymeibion, and £99/head for 51kg lambs from R A Jones, Red Gwenthrew.

A larger number on offer sold to an improved trade throughout with stronger, more competitive bidding on all weights and grades.

The best trade of the day was on the better bred, lighter weight lambs between 32-37kg, with plenty of these types selling above 190ppkg.

Also in good demand were the export weight lambs especially the better meated, better bred types.

Heavier weight lambs, especially white faced tups, also sold to an improved trade.

Very few light weight, under 30kg lambs, were forward which resulted in a good price throughout for these types.

Cull sheep (3,480):

Once again there was a very strong entry of 3,414 cull ewes that sold to a strong trade, with 15 individual buyers present.

In general, the ewes would be slightly plainer types in comparison to the previous week that brought the average down £2.38 on the week to £52.92.

The heaviest Texel x and Suffolk x ewes sold to a stronger trade than the previous week as there weren't many of these types forward.

The majority of ewes entered were plainer hill and mule ewes.

Meated mule ewes sold to a slightly stronger trade on the week with the best reaching £90.

The top price of the day of £130 got hit twice, firstly for a pen of Texel ewes from D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands Farm and secondly from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp.

A total of 48 cull rams sold to £107 from E H Pennie & Son, Gwern Yr Ychain.

Texel ewes to £130; Suffolk x ewes to £96; Mule ewes to £90; Welsh ewes to £72; Speckled ewes to £64; Dolgellau type Welsh ewes to £44.

Store lambs (197):

The first sale of the season with an entry of 200 store lambs selling to a good trade, with an overall average of £51.74.

The trade peaked at £62.50 for a pen of 11 mule tup lambs from D & M Cooke, Coppice Farm, with another pen of mule tups reaching the same price.

Theave lambs sold to £57 for a pen of four Suffolks from F R Williams, Cefncanol, with mixed and clean lambs peaking at £56 for a pen of 21 Texel x from P Robinson, Upper Trefnant.

Other mixed and clean lambs sold to £52.50 from T Hallett, Upper Stapeley.

Mixed and tups sold to a maximum of £46.50 for a pen of 10 from P D Sheppard & Son, Heightley.

Breeding ewes:

An increased entry of 500 breeding ewes was again met with a ring of cautious bidders.

Nevertheless, the trade proved positive with Suffolk x yearlings reaching £160 from T R Craig, Westwood Farm, with others to £158 and £152 twice from the same home.

Other Suffolk x yearlings sold for £150 and £148 from J L Morgan, Tynllwyn and £148 twice from D E & K D Langford, Brunant.

Texel yearlings peaked at £140 from B Jones, Fraithwen with others to £135 from J Morgan, Tynllwyn.

A small number of aged ewes peaked at £122 and £110 for Texel x from E Jackson, Lane Farm.
