A SPOT-ON occasion has helped to raise thousands of pounds for a Vale of Clwyd club.

A Ruthin Town XI defeated Manchester United Legends on penalties in a well supported charity encounter over the weekend, followed by an evening in the company of former England captain Bryan Robson and Denis Irwin in the clubhouse.

Ruthin Town vice-chairman Andy Edwards said: "It was brilliant and it was unreal.

"At one point I was in midfield with Mark Entwistle.

"His man was Denis Irwin and my man was Bryan Robson!

"We have made a clear £8,000 profit, which is tremendous for us to complete the revamp work we have been doing.

"It's all to make it sustainable.

"Three-or-four years ago, we were thinking how we could be sustainable in the long term."

An exciting match ended up 4-4, with Ruthin 4-1 ahead at one stage.

Ruthin's goals came from Andy Edwards, Idris Williams, Ryan Jones and Garmon Hafal.

The match had to be decided by a penalty shootout, which Ruthin won 7-6.

"We had a few of our first team lads there, which is great for them.

"The night do was fantastic. It was packed with 120 people there and the auction raised £4,500 alone.

"Having Bryan Robson and Denis Irwin in the clubhouse and playing against them was fantastic."

The match was sponsored by The Building Plot.
