A NEW display at Wrexham Cemetery gives people the chance to see the differences between traditions and rules around funerals in Victorian times.

Wrexham Council has worked in partnership with Wrexham Glyndwr University and volunteers to create the display, which will be inside the chapel and the cemetery until November.

A statement on Wrexham Council’s website reads: “Nowadays when someone passes away, we turn to professionals to organise the preparations for the funeral. But in Victorian times, things were very different.

“The chapel in Wrexham Cemetery has a new display called ‘The Victorian Culture of Death’ and it looks at the traditions and rules around funerals and mourning in Victorian times so you can find out what those differences were.

“The display will be there until November, so you can go along and find out about the fashions of mourning, funeral practices, the importance of flowers, the work of the memorial mason and gravestone symbols, looking at how people were treated in death in Victorian times compared with now.

“The display has been put together in collaboration with students from Glyndwr University and volunteers.

“There is also a chance to learn more about Wrexham’s Victorians on October 8, 11am, when you are invited on a guided walk of the cemetery, visiting graves and hearing stories uncovered by research volunteers.”
