THERE was glory for Russell Jones and Alison Godwin over the weekend.

Guthrie Jones and Jones Solicitors sponsored the 2019 Denbigh men's and women's singles tournaments, which took place on Saturday and Sunday.

On the first day, club stalwart Russell Jones became the tournament champion for the first time.

Played at Denbigh Tennis Club's courts in Lower Park, the tournament got underway with the defending champion Gareth Jones, Russell's eldest son, not entered.

The semi-finals were one-sided affairs, with Russell Jones striding to a 10-2 victory over Andrew Thomson.

In the other last-four clash, Steve Aylott claimed a 10-1 victory over Marc Shaw.

Tournament champion Russell Jones took an early 4-0 lead in the final, having broken serve twice, and he eventually went on to win 10-4 against Steve Aylott.

Turning to Sunday and Alison Godwin became the ladies' champion for the first time following a thrilling final against long-standing rival Val Fletcher.

The opening six games all went against serve, until Alison bucked the trend to take a 4-3 lead.

However, back came Val Fletcher and she had two championship points when she was 5-4 ahead and serving at 40-15.

Refusing to throw in the towel, some great forehand play brought Alison back to 5-5 and she continued her great form to the tie break, going 6-2 up.

Three of her championship points went, but a sublime cross-court forehand eventually gave her the title.
