A WREXHAM man who died after crashing into the back of a parked lorry on the A5 did so deliberately, an inquest has heard.

Garat Anthony Hannan, 32 and of no fixed abode, died on the early hours of March 20 on the A5 adjacent to Bridleway Caravan Park near Gobowen.

The inquest in Shrewsbury heard how, in the weeks leading up to his death, Mr Hannan had been in touch with members of Wrexham’s adult social care department after being referred to them on March 5.

On March 15 Mr Hannan, who was staying in temporary accommodation, received a visit from an occupational therapist to which he expressed.

Mr Hannan, who suffered with physical health issues, had said in prior years that if his health did not improved he would consider taking his own life.

In the last two years Mr Hannan had received counselling for his mental health, but did not deem them effective as he believed his mental health was tied to his physical.

The inquest heard how in the days leading up to his death he had spoken to family members, to which he said he wasn’t getting any better and that he had not received any painkillers.

Speaking at the inquest, Mr Hannan’s mother Fiona Williams said: “Sadly it was a verdict none of us wanted to hear. Garat wasn’t a number or a statistic, he was my boy.

“For 32 years he was my son. A part of me died with him that night.

“He’s left a very big hole that can never be filled. We as a family will move forward with a heavy heart.”

At the conclusion of the inquest, coroner Joanne Lees ruled that his death was by suicide.

“What he said to the occupational therapist was so specific that it’s impossible to ignore,” said Ms Lees.

“It seems to me that the only conclusion that I can reach is one of suicide. The evidence leads me to conclude this is a deliberate act because it concords with how Garat describes how he wanted to take his own life.

“The medical cause of death from the pathologist was of multiple traumatic injuries. Garat suffered with physical health problems and was likely suffering from depression.

“On balance of probability, Garat came about by his death by suicide.”
