THIRTY-seven years after Prestatyn Running Club was established, veteran Steve Skates broke new ground last week with a brilliant endurance display.

He finished third overall in the gruelling 185-mile King Offa's Dyke race in which virtually half the 54 entrants did not make it to the finish in Prestatyn.

Running with his friend Phil Rushton, Steve was in the leading eight all the way and at one point was in third position.

"The toughest point was around Knighton, where there was a very steep hill, and there was still a long way to go," he said.

Almost inevitably, he suffered from sore feet and required medical attention, but his tenacity paid off, reaching the finish with Phil in 68 hours 37 minutes.

The first man home, in an amazing 49 hours 43 minutes, was Jack Scott.

After a few days' rest and reflection Steve said he was very happy with his performance and things had gone pretty well as planned.

"I would consider doing it again," he said.

On the eve of her journey to university, Jenna Bagnall was in the Welsh team which competed in the British and Irish Junior Mountain-Running international in Llanberis, finishing 14th in the under-20 category.

Recent recruit Steve Haimes was the club's first finisher in the 11.5k Llyn Alwen trail race on Sunday, coming ninth overall in 50.49. Helen Ashworth followed in 25th (54.28) and Ally Reid was 40th in 59.37.

On the same day, a quartet made the trip to Southport for the Seaside 10k, and Andrew Clark continued his impressive improvement by slicing over two minutes off his pb and seven minutes off his time in the same event last year.

He was 181st in 45.18, with Martin Gill 385th in 50.52, Cat Prestwich 458th in 52.13 (pb) and Helen Alefounder 791st in 58.07.

Husband and wife Rob Alexander and Jo Hoppes also broke new ground when they wore the PRC vests in the Oregon Parkrun.

It was only the third time for the run to be held and the couple claimed a "double first".

Rob was first home in 19.34 and Jo was fifth overall, and the first lady, in 23.42.
