New season lambs:

Another good entry of 2,777 lambs were present.

Well covered fed lambs and medium weight category attracting a premium and a better than anticipated trade throughout.

Pastureland sale at Higher Kinnerton - October 1

A TOTAL of 9.48 acres of pastureland was offered for sale by auctioneers J Bradburne Price & Co on Tuesday evening, October 1.

It sold for £119,000 (£12,552/acre).

Strong bidding from a large crowd who gathered at the Royal Oak, Higher Kinnerton saw the price quickly escalate from an opening bid of £70,000 to go on to sell for a figure in excess of the pre-auction top guide price.

The auctioneers commented that this emphasises the benefit to both vendors and buyers of a sale by auction providing open competitive bidding and immediate exchange of contracts and a fixed completion date.

Ruthin store and breeding stock sale - September 26

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of three cows and calves to £1,980; 218 store cattle to £1,260; 102 calves; 1,370 store lambs to £71.50; 1,830 breeding ewe lambs to £118; 1,369 breeding ewes to £300 and 140 breeding rams to £682.50.

Calves (auctioneer: Dafydd Parry):

The largest entry seen in a while of 102 calves and another full clearance.

The top price of the day was by Peniarth Fawr with an 8 week old British Blue bull calf selling for £365, with another 7 week old bull calf from the same vendor achieving £340.

Another 8 week old Brit Blue bull calf from a local vendor sold for £280.

Limousin calves sold to £290 for a 7 week old bull calf and another calf of the same age for £285.

There were a few consignments of Friesian bull calves selling to £98 and British Friesian to £70.

All calves were sold and vendors went away with payment on the day. More calves could have been sold, with buyers looking for more on a weekly basis.

Buyers range from Anglesey to Gwynedd, to Cheshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire.

The vendor with the highest priced calf, one month old and under and sired by a Genus bull during each month, will be awarded a £50 voucher to spend on agricultural products.

Store lambs:

There was another very good entry of 1,370 store lambs remaining in very keen demand, averaging £45.26 overall.

Top priced were: Texels to £71.50; Cross Breds to £66.50; Suffolk to £55.50; Welsh to £44; Lleyn to £49; Mule to £56; Charolais to £57.

As with previous weeks, more could have been sold with a number of buyers looking for lambs.

Breeding ewe lambs:

With a large number of pre-notified entries, a large entry was expected a large entry and the auction wasn't wrong, with a final entry of 1,830 multi-breed breeding ewe lambs.

Quality Texel types sold to £118 for a pen of 12 lambs and the annual consignment of stylish lambs from Penrhewl topped at £110, with another pen of 20 lambs exceeding the £100 mark at £103.

Mule entries topped at £92, Suffolk at £76 and Beltex at £60.

The sale included consignments of Aberfield x ewe lambs, topping at £86 for a nice pen full of 17 lambs, averaging £68.33.

More are expected over the coming weeks.

Breeding ewes:

There was a total of 1,369 of breeding ewes, with an increased entry of Welsh ewes, which were a good trade.

Shapely Texel ewes were selling to £300 with other Texel prices hit £148, averaging £123.08.

Amongst the highest prices were some Beltex ewes at £170.

Suffolks proved to be in demand, topping at £148 and averaging £132. Mule ewes sold to £144, averaging £113.

Of the large Welsh ewes entered, the top price went to a pen of ewes to £118, with 3 and 4 year old ewes to £71

Breeding rams:

There was a 91 per cent clearance on the rams, a sign that the demand is there for all breeds.

Suffolk ram lambs proved to be in great demand with a consignment of good quality lambs selling to 650gns, averaging above 600gns.

Another advertised entry, this time Texels from Foel Gadeiriau, sold to 620gns.

Charolais rams made 480gns, Beltex to 440gns and Blue Faced Leicester to 200gns.

There were 140 rams, with increased entries expected over coming weeks.

AN excellent show again, with trade seeming to strengthen very slightly, especially for mid-range cattle.

Barren and cull cows (30):

A similar number of OTM cattle were on offer, seeing a top price of £1318.68 (148ppkg) for a Charolais x OTM weighing in at 891kg from Roberts & Jones, Parc.

D G Pryce, Broomhill Farm made 159ppkg for a Blonde d'Aquitaine x weighing 763kg making £1213.17.

Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £910.12 (122ppkg) for a Hereford x weighing 746kg from N F & M R Gittins, Tynewydd Isa.

J I & J E Williams, Llwynybrain made 130ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 590kg making £767.

Heifers under 48 months topped at £1215 (163ppkg) for a heifer weighing 746kg from Roberts & Jones, Parc.

An entry of 10 prime cattle on offer sold to a top price of £1,528.80 (245ppkg) for a Limousin x steer weighing 624kg from J M & S M Rowlands, Dolwen.

Heifers topped at £914.48 (161ppkg) for a Welsh Black x weighing 568kg from H & W Howells, Goetre.

Bulls topped at £1,259.28 (198ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 636kg from RC Gethin, Tanllan.

Prime lambs (3,994)

The entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 166.43ppkg, with a top price of 205ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 43kg making £88 from BE & BE Langford, Llettymeibion and £103.50/head for 80kg lambs from FW Humphreys & Sons, Brook House Farm.

A slightly smaller number of lambs forward sold to an improved trade throughout, which was an improvement on other local and national livestock market prices from late the previous week.

Again better quality, better bred lambs were in most demand selling up to 205ppkg with other good pens selling between 190-200ppkg.

Heavier weight lambs were also, again, in better demand especially the 55+ kilo lambs which would regularly sell above £90/head.

Middle weight / export weight lambs also sold to a generally better trade, as did the lighter weight 32-38 kilo lambs with some of the better bred ones of this weight going back onto farm as store lambs.

Trade for 30kg and below lambs would be similar to the previous week with more of these types (especially hill bred ones) on offer.

Most difficult to sell were any over-fat lambs of any weight, so vendors are encouraged to keep drawing their lambs regularly.

The week saw an increased entry of 2,103 cull ewes that met a very strong trade once again, with an overall average of £50.75.

Trade was very similar to the previous week, with many of the best Texel and Suffolk x ewes selling for over £85.

A tremendous consignment for cull ewes travelled all the way from the Isle of Man and indeed topped the market with a pen of eight ewes that sold for £138.

The whole consignment averaged a staggering £100.26!

Topping the cull ram section during week was G & A Leisure Ltd, Bettws Hall that sold a Texel ram at £122.

More lambs for the farmers and feeding men to bid at, which resulted in another buoyant trade throughout.
