Ruthin store and breeding stock sale - October 3

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of seven cows and calves to £1,220; 240 store cattle to £1,100; 81 calves to £355; 18 OTM cattle to £1,132.85; 1,727 store lambs to £70; 864 breeding ewe lambs to £106; 1,525 breeding ewes to £170; 225 breeding rams to 450gns and 15 Hereford cattle to £2,310.

Calves (auctioneer: Dafydd Parry):

The calves keep coming in, with 81 in attendance during the week.

The top price went to a 3 month old British Blue bull calf from Marian Mawr, which achieved £355.

This was followed closely by a 3 month Lim bull from the same vendor selling for £310.

Two-and-a-half month old Friesian bulls topped at £125.

A one month old British Blue bull calf to £240 and a 1 month old Limousin bull calf to £290.

There was another new vendor, with 10 five-week-old British Blue and Aberdeen Angus x calves ranging from £140 to £325.

Another recently new and now regular vendor had Limousin, British Blue and Friesian calves, with Friesians topping at £40, Limousin bulls to £280 and British Blue heifers to £240.

A 2 week old Limousin calf from an intermediate area sold for £280.

A consignment of Norwegian Red x bull calves were £25.

All calves were sold and vendors went away with payment on the day.

More calves could have been sold, with buyers looking for more on a weekly basis.

Buyers range from Anglesey to Gwynedd, and Cheshire and Shropshire to Worcestershire.

There was a good general trade, with an increase in numbers expected each week through the autumn.

Dispersal sale of Hereford cattle:

It gave the company pleasure in offering quality Hereford cattle being the dispersal sale on behalf of ‘Afarn’ Herd.

As expected, the sale attracted a few new faces resulting in a full clearance and a good trade.

The highest priced cow with calf at foot was for lot 11, the first of the Polled Herefords - Churchlands Estate 1 Nardia 09 (P) AI.

Sire: Remitall Super Duty 42S (Semes) (Imp Can) Approx 14 weeks in calf to Joker.

Dam: Cheerbrook 1 Nardia 3rd (P) which sold for 1,600gns.

Lot 12 also proved to be a hit, the Churchlands Estate 1 Nardia 70 BT (P) D.O.B: 27.09.14 Sire: Churchlans Estate 1 Batavia (P) AI Dam: Churchlands Estate 1 Nadia 09 (P) AI.

This was eventually sold for 1,420gns.

The pedigree Herefords averaged £1,258.50.

Polled Hereford averaged £1,360.80.

There was a Pedigree Hereford bull on offer - Churchlands Estate 1 Joker 62 F10 (P) D.O.B: 24.07.14 Sire: Shraden 1 Joker (P) Dam: Churchlands Estate 1 Fiona 10 BT (P) TF.

This went on to sell for 2,200gns.

Breeding ewe lambs:

A very good entry of 864 ewe lambs sold to £106 for a pen of very nice Texel lambs from T M Ifan, Hafod Fawr.

Mule ewe lambs sold to £87, Cross Bred to £82, Suffolk to £70 and Welsh to £54.

Breeding ewes:

There was an excellent entry of breeding ewes, with an increased entry again of Welsh ewes.

Texel yearlings sold to £170; Mule to £87; Cross Bred to £82; Suffolk to £70; Welsh to £54.

Breeding Rams:

A total of 225 rams were forward.

A video of the lots was shown early in the morning, which attracted a strong crowd.

Topping the day was a Charolais shearling ram at 450gns.

A Blue faced Leicester shearling made 400gns.

Beltex, Suffolk ram lambs and Suff shearlings all sold up to 350gns

Mold primestock sale - October 7

THERE was a large entry of 300 beef and cull cows.

A total of 185 beef were difficult work to sell resulting in reduced prices.

Meanwhile, 115 cull cows were met with better demand, but they were down on previous weeks.

A smaller show of lambs met firmer demand.

Cull ewes also saw an improved trade.

THERE was an entry of 501 store cattle in the 54th annual NFU sale, with an excellent show of cattle forward.

Numerous buyers were present resulting in trade following recent trends due to the current beef prices.

SIMILAR good numbers of store cattle were forward, with another pleasing trade given the current beef prices.

A large number of dairy cows were forward, which continue to meet excellent demand, selling at brisk rates.

There was another nice entry of calves with trade slightly firmer.

Ruthin store and breeding pigs - October 4

A TOTAL of 180 store and breeding pigs were forward with a 100 per cent clearance again and many new buyers in attendance, to include local butchers and wholesalers.

A mixed weaner trade ranged from £12 to £47 with better type (Welsh / Pietrein) crosses all above the £40 mark.

Store pigs from £60 to £80 depending on the breed.

85kg Gilts from I Hughes, Waen y Lloc topped the store sale from £120 to £140.

Cull boars were still difficult, but there was a good demand for sows of all shapes and sizes.

E Roberts of Llithfaen topped the cull sows at £165 for a one and a half year old Welsh sow weighing 199kg.

Ruthin primestock sale - October 8

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 2,383 prime lambs to 225.0ppk / £97; 504 cull ewes and rams to £131 and seven prime cattle to 207ppk / £1,178.78.

New season lambs:

There was another good entry of 2,383 lambs.

Well covered fed lambs and medium weight category attracted a premium and an increase of 10ppk on the week, with medium and heavy lambs a brisker trade.

Barren and cull cows (48):

A similar number of OTM cattle were on offer during the week, seeing for a top price of £1151.70 (165ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 698kg from GP Vaughan & Son, Dolcorsllwyn.

G & A Williams, Nantygeifr made 149ppkg for a British Blue x weighing 685kg making £1020.65.

Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1012.44 (118ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 858kg from GP Pugh & Son, The Garth.

NF & MR Gittins, Tynewydd Isa made 115ppkg for a Hereford x weighing 683kg making £785.45.

Heifers under 48 months topped at £1102.71 (177ppkg) for a heifer weighing 623kg from JT Jones, Tynewydd Cyffin.

TH Turner & Co, Red House made 150ppkg for a Limousin x heifer weighing 681kg making £1021.50.

Averages of the day were as follows:

Prime lambs (4,186):

An entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 165.66ppkg, with a top price of 213ppkg for a pen of lambs weighing 82kg from CR Pryce, Yr Helyg.

A similar number of lambs on offer sold to an improved trade throughout, with more competitive bidding on all weights and grades of lambs.

Yet again, better quality, better meated lambs were in most demand.

Export weight lambs (39 – 45 kilos) sold to a much sharper trade with keener bidding on these types than in recent weeks.

Again, heavyweight lambs (especially the very heavy ones) continue to sell well with plenty of pens selling at £90 and above.

Very few lighter weight lambs were on offer and again these sold to an improved demand with a number of the better bred smaller lambs going back out, on farm, as store lambs.

Vendors are encouraged to keep drawing lambs for sale especially the well fleshed types.

The week saw an increased entry of 2,504 cull ewes meeting a strong trade throughout once again with an overall average of £46.88 being achieved.

This was down £3.28 on the week, however the ewes forward generally weren't as strong.

The top price of the day of £130 was achieved by CE Pryce, Yr Helyg for a terrific Texel ewe.

The trade on the strongest crossbred ewes wasn't quite as strong as the previous week, however many of the best ewes were still selling in excess of £85.

Top price in the cull rams was achieved by JP & CM Jones, Maesterran that sold two Welsh yearling rams for £300.
