RUTHIN Farmers' Market reports sales of 2,931 prime lambs to 212.2ppk / £85; 339 cull ewes and rams to £105, and four prime cattle to 215ppk / £1,139.50.

New season lambs:

Another very good entry of 2,931 lambs returned an SQQ of 166.9.

There was an increase in the number of heavier lambs forward.

Less lambs forward met with a good trade on all sorts, especially the small lambs, which were in demand.

Llanrwst market - October 17

A CATALOGUED entry of 154 hardy Welsh Mountain Rams were on show in the annual Denbighshire ram sale.

The best rams were a flying trade, but commercial rams slightly harder to sell reflecting on a 75 per cent clearance with a sold average of 945gns.

The sale leader was a yearling ram sold by Gwynfor and Beryl Williams, Ty Newydd Pennant, Gwytherin, Abergele for 7,400gns to E W & M M Jenkins, TynyGraig, Talybont, Ceredigion, who went on to sell a further seven rams for a sale average of 3,278gns

Second highest price was a yearling ram sold by J M & A O Edwards, Cwm Cilan, Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant, Oswestry for 6,500gns to J Owen, Golygfar Dyffryn, Rowen, Conwy.

The third highest price was again sold by J M & A O Edwards, Cwm Cilan for 5,200gns to G L Jones, Cwm y Geifr, Llanarmon DC, Llangollen.

Meanwhile, the fourth highest was again from father and daughter Gwynfor and Beryl Williams, Ty Newydd Pennant selling for 5,000gns to B Evans, Glanrafon, Talybont, Ceredigion.

Mold stock sale - October 18

THERE was a pleasing show of 374 stores and stirks again.

Trade was still firm, although wintering cattle were perhaps a shade back on previous weeks.

Dairy cattle met resistance, although there were plenty of buyers ringside.

Calves were again hard to place.

More buyers were present for the strongest, best calves.

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 49 store cattle to £1,175; 51 calves; six OTM cattle to £992; 2,101 store lambs to £77; 472 breeding ewe lambs to £87; 491 breeding ewes to £84; 151 breeding rams to 400gns and one Limousin bull to 1,900gns.

Calves (auctioneer: Dafydd Parry):

The calves keep coming in, with 78 during the week.

Top price was a British Blue 2-month-old calf at £335.

Another 100 per cent clearance of the multibreed entry.

All calves were sold and vendors went away with payment on the day.

More calves could have been sold, with buyers looking for more on a weekly basis.

Ruthin Farmers Auction has teamed with Genus to run a monthly competition within the weekly calf section to win Genus vouchers.

The vendor with the highest priced calf - 1 month old and under and sired by a Genus bull - during each month will be awarded a £50 voucher to spend on agricultural products.

The winner of the September competition was J T & G M Edwards, Maes y Llyn, Llantisilio.

The calf was sired by Greystone Glacier.

Cattle were generally more difficult to sell along with national trends, but there was a good trade on the strongest types.

FARMERS Marts reports entries of 27 breeding cows and calves, calved and in-calf heifers, and two bulls, including the reduction sale of Pedigree Welsh Black Cattle on behalf of D Wynne, Tynywern, Bryneglwys, Corwen.

The sale also had 3,043 store sheep - including 324 breeding ewes, 965 cast ewes, 1,563 store and ewe lambs, and 191 breeding rams with the first Annual Welsh Mountain Breeding Ram Sale on behalf of the Maldwyn and Ceredigion Flock Masters. Trade was much improved from the previous day with the better lambs a very good trade.

Demand was consistent throughout.

Barren and cull cows (35):

A similar number of OTM cattle were on offer during the week, seeing a top price of £1209.78 (143ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 846kg from Francis Partners, Penllwyn.

J & M Gethin, Tyn Y Rhos made 121ppkg for a Charolais x weighing 925kg, making £1119.25.

Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1170.92 (146ppkg) for a Charolais x weighing 802kg from B H Evans & Son, Rowton Grange. The same home made 136ppkg for another Charolais x weighing 853kg making £1160.08.

Heifers under 48 months topped at £1058.91 (141ppkg) for a heifer weighing 751kg from J & M Gethin, Tyn Y Rhos.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (19) 106.85ppkg / £740.44; Cows 48-72 Months (7) 117.04ppkg / £863.77; Heifers Under 48 months (8) 114.35ppkg / £723.42; Bull Under 72 months (1) 135ppkg / £788.40; Overall Average 111.31ppkg.

Prime lambs (4,336):

An similar entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 161.99ppkg, with a top price of 194ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 42.5kg making £82.50 from D R Owen & Sons,

Sandilands and £90/head for 53.5kg lambs from M & H Owens, Glantre.

A similar number of lambs forward sold to a slower trade than the previous week, which would be in line with other local and national markets from late the previous week.

However, good quality, well fleshed lambs of any weight continued to find keen competitive bidding throughout, and

more of these types could easily be sold to vendors' advantage. Also in decent demand were the lighter weight lambs (under 38kg) with well fleshed and hill bred lambs finding good competition.

Smaller, leaner lambs continued to be sold to go back on farm as store lambs.

Most difficult sold on the day were over fat lambs and poorer bred export weight lambs.

Better bred heavier weight lambs continued to sell to a decent demand.

The week saw an increased entry of 2,089 cull ewes that met a solid trade once again, with an overall average of £48.78 being achieved.

Trade saw many of the best Texel x ewes exceeding £80.

Most of the best Mule ewes were selling between £62 and £68, with the very best reaching £73.

There was a shortage of the very best Texel ewes forward during the sale.

The top price of the day of £116 went to W R P Jones, Pant.

A total of 78 cull rams were present during the sale, meeting a fantastic trade with a few farmers looking to buy rams for breeding.

A top price of £480 went to D J L & S J Evans, Rhoscyninfa.
