PLANS have been submitted for a car park to service the Welsh language centre set to be built in St Asaph.

Denbighshire County Council's application proposes a 30-space car park on the former Haul road which was used during construction of new school buildings at the city’s Ysgol Glan Clwyd.

The £1.5m Welsh language centre is set to open at the site in 2020.

Based at the old science block in St Asaph’s Ysgol Glan Clwyd, it will provide a centre for the promotion of Welsh to residents of all ages.

The centre will provide support to English medium schools to improve their offering in Welsh as well as adult classes and crèche facilities for the area.

Ysgol Glan Clwyd could also use the facilities if there is an increase in capacity at the school.

A report to planning officers warned that the car park was a requirement for the centre to be able to operate.

It said: “If no action regarding car parking was taken to address the identified need, this may create issues on a busy school site e.g. access may be restricted at key times of the school day, potential negative impact upon the viability of the leisure facility and the plans for the Welsh language centre itself could be put at risk.”
