TWO friends who cycled 200 miles along some of Wales’ most challenging roads have raised £1500 for charity.

David Roberts, originally from Abergele and Dan Welling from Craig-y-Don, rode from Cardiff to Rhos-on-Sea over four days.

The pair were given a fantastic reception at the finish line on Rhos-on-Sea promenade on Sunday, having raised money for children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent.

The pair decided to raise money for that particular charity in honour of a friend whose nine year-old daughter was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour earlier this year.

Father-of-three David, who now lives in Locking, Somerset, said: “We are part of a very tight knit group of friends and been friends for many, many years.

“When one of my friends found out that his daughter had an inoperable brain tumour it hit a lot of people very hard.

“We thought we’d like to do something to help and the family told us about all these amazing charities that have helped them and continue to help them.

“The family have been overwhelmed with all the help they’ve received from the charities and they felt they’d like to give something back.

David and Dan overcame some challenging conditions, with low temperatures and persistent rain, particularly during day two and three, making things difficult.

As they cycled along National Cycle Route 8 and on sections of the A470, they found parts of the route had been flooded after the banks of rivers Wye and Severn had burst in places.

Despite punctures and a replacement bike for David prior to the final day, the pair completed their challenge in style, greeted by family and friends armed with banners on the finish line at the promenade.

"We were given a fantastic reception at Rhos and Dan and I were thrilled to be able to help out such an important cause," David added. To donate to the cause, go to: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/walesbikeathon2019.
