GENEROUS donors have been thanked after putting Wrexham Foodbank's van back on the road.

The food bank launched an appeal on Monday, urgently calling for help after its van failed its MOT and required about £500 of work.

Without the vehicle, members of the team would have seriously struggled to continue their work in the community.

Fortunately, kind hearted members of the public came forward with donations and the van is now back in action.

Sally Ellinson, project manager at Wrexham Foodbank, told the Leader: "Our van is an essential part of running the food bank.

"We use it to get our food from the warehouse to our distribution centres.

"It is an old van which we inherited from Flintshire Foodbank and it has been fantastic.

"Without it we'd have had to pay to hire another van, which is obviously a lot more costly, and there's too much food to be putting in people's cars."

She said she was delighted with the response from the community to the appeal, adding: "We thought we'd put it out on social media to see if people could help. "The donations came in and we have had the work done so it is all sorted now and the van is back out.

"We would like to say a big thank you for the help, but also to say that funding is something we very much need on an ongoing basis. "It is fantastic that people have rallied around for the van but we have to pay the rent for our warehouse.

"Without a warehouse to receive donations and store the food the project obviously couldn't exist, we don't receive any funding for rent and it is covered entirely by donations from the public. "Whilst we do appreciate donations of food we always need money too.

"People can donate online via Paypal on our website or send cheques to our postal address (Unit 1a, Puleston Industrial Estate, Ruabon Road, Wrexham, LL13 7RF) or email to get bank details (info@wrexham.foodbank.org.uk)."

Wrexham Foodbank, which opened in 2012, gave 4,318 three-day emergency food supplies to people in crisis last year alone.
