STARS of the Denbighshire sports scene gathered in Llangollen for the 2019 Denbighshire Community Sports Awards.

The prestigious annual organised by Denbighshire County Council, now in its 8th year, celebrates individuals, teams, schools and clubs for their dedication to local community grass roots sport in the county.

More than 100 nominations had been received by the judging panel but it had to draw a shortlist of just 25 finalists, who were invited along with their friends, families and colleagues, to the glittering awards ceremony at Llangollen Pavilion on November 7.

The winners included Huw Jones, junior sports performer of the year; Holly Roberts, young inspiration of the year; Denbigh High School, sport in school award; Anastasia Blease, disability sport award; Ysgol Glan Clwyd Girls U13s football team, club of the year; Jonathon Dawes, coach of the year; Llio Jones, volunteer of the year; and Bryn Lloyd Jones, lifetime achievement.

Guests were treated to a night of celebration, inspirational stories and a speech from Paralympic and World Championship gold medallist Liz Johnson.

Jamie Groves, managing director of Denbighshire Leisure, the council's leisure service, said: "The Denbighshire community sport awards has helped recognise and share some amazing stories over the last few years and 2019 was no exception. The standard of the nominations this year was outstanding and shows how many talented people we have here in Denbighshire."

Denbighshire Leisure, including its disability sport officer and active young people team, said it will now work closely with award nominees and winners to improve community sport in Denbighshire.
