A RUTHIN school recently held a well-attended open day event.

The cold weather on the morning of November 30 didn't deter guests of all ages from paying a visit to Ysgol Gellifor primary school.

The event was attended by families from neighbouring communities along with children, parents and adults from the school itself.

Assistant head teacher Mandy Brookes-Jones said: "It was great to see such a brilliant turn out. There were lots of activities such as Christmas crafts and fairground games. The day was a great success."

"The school choir, Gellifor Vocals, sang a selection of songs to their audience throughout the morning whilst Peppa Pig played in the Muddy Puddles and Spiderman challenged the children to a Penalty Shoot Out on the school yard.

"It was a very busy morning and the staff would like to thank everyone for taking the time to come along and join in with the fun."

The event followed a string of successes enjoyed by young pupils from the school who had competed at the Llandyrnog Eisteddfod on November 15.

Ethan Mould took first place in the Year Three and Four recitation competition, whilst Anwen Roberts was the winner of the same competition for Year Five and Six pupils, with Maya Whitley and Seren Roberts finishing in second and third.

Johnny Hammond was first in the Year Five and Six 'Y Zw' art competition and Joe Harrison came first in the Year Five and Six ICT competition.

There was also a first for Maggie McGregor in the Year Five and Six Writing competition.

Mandy Brookes-Jones added: "We had an absolutely brilliant outcome at the Eisteddfod and we are incredibly proud of the children for competing in the Welsh Second Language competition."
