A VALE of Clwyd craftsman who was whittled down from 6,000 people has won a national Christmas competition.

Garry Hession, from Llanynys, made a bird table from oak and slate in just four hours as part of Channel 4’s Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas programme presented by Kirstie Allsopp.

Mr Hession founded Vale Crafts 12 months ago after a lifetime of “messing about with wood” in his spare time but now makes a range of products including spindle and cup, brass vases and a ball point pen.

He sources his products locally and his design caught the attention of the Christmas TV show's Raise the Roof production team. He was among just 60 finalists to be invited to the show in Devon, where he was given four hours to make his best item

Mr Hession said: “There was a lot of design work and preparation time involved in preparing for the competition, as the judging was based on skill, design, decorating and 'WOW' factor.

“The award promotes Vale Crafts to both local and nationwide people, demonstrating high end quality products which make ideal wedding, anniversary and Christmas presents."
